@AK_Balaur @clumsystiggy You're right. I read a comment on twitter saying basically that and that's what i get for not reading it. Also this paper, though differentiated by osteological correlates, found 2 species of Saurolophus to be distinguishable by sc
@CeraMtns Oh okay here we go, midline feature scales are known in a few different genera. https://t.co/BHAVu8I0s9 https://t.co/UhlNbrj84V
@HodariNundu @TylerGreenfieId @Tessasaurus_rex https://t.co/D6KmwBPJhO Paper on that, though the idea that this reflected IRL patterning has recently been disputed even if the scalation pattern itself is a strong taxonomic signal due to color not always c
Scale size variation probably has to do with a lot of factors, like skin flexibility, abrasion resistance, and thermoregulation. But colouring isn't one of them, so take studies that infer colouration based on scale size with a couple helpings of salt http
@Philoceratops @dinosaurc0mics @MrDrProfJohnstn Yes, the "bumps" are not osteoderms as they do not have bony cores. Instead they are large scales that have more recently been termed feature scales. https://t.co/8qugINkEVa https://t.co/eo2uikZnPl https://t.
@CreatorJayce Dinosaurs had many different scale types. I recommend reading Bell (2012) and Arbour et al. (2014) to brush up on the terminology, too much to cover here. https://t.co/eo2uikZnPl https://t.co/kVh0m66edI
@MetTiinA Yeah they are. Looks like the paper is open access: https://t.co/zJzwJRzYpe
