@deevybee @igeltanne @westwoodsam1 @hertzpodcast There are research papers showing that: is a known phenomenon/strategy (in the industry, I appreciate perhaps not of as much interest for ppl outside publishing, tho one could argue it really should be): ht
One thing I like about PSE's publisher is that it assigns accepted manuscripts to an issue fairly quickly. A somewhat less known tactic used by other publishers is to keep articles "in press" for a long time to inflate journal IFs. https://t.co/eHo9X2LfBU

@PessoaBrain @ThackeryBrown @jimthommo Their impact factor is also inflated dramatically because they ridiculously delay publication of articles after acceptance; see this article showing how the game works https://t.co/HlPW63utkh
@jeroenbosman @MsPhelps @LizzieGadd @Andy_Tattersall @PhdGeek @KateFONeill @CopyrightRuth @tomstafford @bev_a @TRANSPOSEsci @aaas I'm thinking more along these lines, *but now in reverse* given the new JIF guidelines, if that makes any more sense. (https:/
Another form of manipulation is done by delaying the publication of articles in press, but publishing it online right away (so-called 'early access' - have you noticed already some articles published 'next year', as if it made any sense?). https://t.co/gl
@UoML_Steve There were some articles published a couple of years ago that speculated that it was a way to manipulate JIF. Not sure that still holds, but an interesting theory. https://t.co/OPLcornrb1 + https://t.co/deCsW0HVOh
@fxcoudert @YTrolez @SebVidalChem Yup, it's well known... https://t.co/eDirYpWVXo
Interesting. Not sure I’ve experienced a one year online-to-print delay but will wait and see how our recently accepted paper in Cerebral Cortex fairs https://t.co/KYc8UjlhX3

By sabotaging their own print versions, journals can game the system and inflate IFs by 20-30%! That's fun, troubling, but also inspiring, as similar logic may promote pre-prints and open science, which is nice.

Uggh. Simple solution: Use the acceptance or online publication date to compute IF. Better solution: Abandon IF as a metric and do a proper individualized assessment of academic performance.

I’d never thought that long in-press delays might be a conscious impact factor manipulation strategy by journal publishers. This game-playing could be eliminated by simply regarding the first online appearance as the actual publication date.

A lag between online and print publications inflate the impact factor of a journal. This is because the citation count clock for the impact factor calculation starts after the print date even though the online version has been getting citations already. In
